Team Building

Summer Camp | Coach Contact Days

When: Monday - Friday, June 20 - June 24, 2011

We encourage all incoming freshmen, sophomores, juniors and senior prospective wrestlers interested in the sport and challenge of wrestling to come to this great team-building event.  Additional details pending.

We will start camp at River Falls High School and conclude at Kevin Black's Victory School of Wrestling (River Falls) and a surprise location for a great event.  This annual event encompasses a lot of team building, goal setting, technique, live drilling, fun games & interesting challenges.  By the end of camp, you should have an understanding of what little things you should to do as a wrestler in order to be ready and prepared for the upcoming season.  You will also have a better understanding of your coaches and their ability to help you achieve your goals and development as an extraordinary student athlete.

There is a host of opportunities for summer wrestling in this area.  Wrestlers are all encouraged to stay active, stay in the weight room and make good decisions this summer.  The formula is simple for this summer: get in the weight room consistently; lift hard; and run consistently.

2011 Dam Stairs Excercise at Victory School of Wrestling

Note: Speed and Strength Training Class Sign Up Forms are Available at the High School Activities Office.  Although the class begins on Monday, June 13, you can resume your lifting and speed training starting on Thursday, June 16.  The program runs through the end of July.  There are five different times / sessions available each day to choose from.  Students are expected to attend one of the sessions at least four days per week at the River Falls High School fitness room (weight room).

Media Contact Protocol

Top

For the sake of a single unified message, single point of contact, accurate & complete context as well as regularly scheduled communications, please do not contact local media directly regarding photos, article ideas or comments.  In season's past, we had too many individuals sending information to the paper.  Some overzealous parents insisted that their athlete deserved top billing and recognition.  Others voiced personal complaints about coverage or lack thereof.  Regardless of legitimacy or sincerity, if you have ideas, comments or photos, please send them to Coach Cudd or to the club secretary (who will also forward to Coach Joe).  There are no guarantees of publication; however, Coach Joe will pass along comments and photos to local media.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Post-Match Parent & Fan Gatherings

Top

As a means for everyone getting to know each other better and to further support our team, our group will get together in the high school commons immediately following each HOME dual meet event.  Our hospitality group will organize to provide healthy snacks for the wrestlers, their family and all those who would like to stay.  Often, fans and parents relive stories from the evening's events.  Plenty of chit-chat (and possibly some B.S.), but always a good time to get to know the other fans and parents as we all wait for the kids to clean up and ready to go home.  The coaches may make some announcements as well (i.e. travel itinerary, practice changes, updates, etc.).  This is a great opportunity to provide some valued encouragement to the entire team as they stream in to grab a quick snack.

If you can help by donating items (cold cuts, cheese and crackers, fresh fruit, sports drinks, lemonade, milk, cookies, etc.), please bring to the high school prior to the match (around 6:00 PM), find any hospitality or board member and we can take care of the rest.  We will set things up on a table in the commons area.  If you are kind enough to donate items, this does not have to be extravagant or gourmet.  Keep it simple / keep it light.  Many of the wrestlers are in the process of managing their weight.

Related - after some nearby tournaments, some adults will casually meet at the River Falls bowling alley to grab a bite and for some serious BS.  Again, this is a great opportunity for some good conversation and discussion among the fans and parents.  This is neither school endorsed nor a booster club-sponsored event and all bills will have to be paid by individuals.  If parents and fans decide to go, please leave your children and wrestlers at home.  The bowling alley serves alcohol and is essentially a bar & grille.

Ellsworth Invitational Tournament

Saturday, December 3, 2011

Top

This varsity individual tournament includes nine great teams including Ellsworth, Boyceville, Cadott, Medford, Unity, Durand, St. Croix Falls, and Prescott.  This tournament has proven to be one of the toughest on the varsity calendar and a good pulse for the season ahead.  Ellsworth will undoubtedly be one of the toughest teams in the entire state and make no doubt, this significant tournament is a big deal to the team.

Dells Duals Tournament

Saturday, December 10, 2011

Top

This varsity (team) tournament has always been an extremely good event with 28 teams of talent coming from throughout the state.  The JV The kids wrestle hard, and then get to play at the water park.

Wrestling Team: The entire wrestling team travels via bus on Friday December 9, stays overnight Friday and Saturday night; and return to River Falls - Sunday morning.  On Saturday evening after wrestling, the booster club will provide a pizza & soda meal in the hotel commons area.  Pack your own food for a couple days - there are plenty food choices; however, items are quite expensive - at the dome (concessions) as well as at the resort itself.

Family & Fans:  All fans and parents are encouraged to come to this great event.  Family and fans need to provide their own transportation and food; however, the accommodations, the competition and the venue are very good.  Make it a weekend and come on Friday to play.

There are no rooms reserved for River Falls Boosters this year.  Everyone is responsible for their own rooms by calling the reservations desk directly.  You can choose to stay at Chula Vista Resort or any other nearby accomodation.

At the Wisconsin Dells Center dome, it is always pleasant inside.  Wrestling is held here.

After the competition, the kids (and some parents) unwind in the water park at Chula Vista.

Northern Badger

Northern Badger Wrestling Classic

Wednesday and Thursday, December 28 and 29, 2011

All RF middle school wrestlers and non-participating high school wrestlers are expected to help during this event.  While helping, it is eye opening for many athletes to see this very high-level tournament.  To think that they will soon wrestle in this very tournament in the next year or two - is sometimes a bit overwhelming.  Every kid in this tournament was likely in a middle school program, where with good influences and goals to be in this event some day.  For those that have yet to see a very large tournament, this is an extremely good experience right here in River Falls.

Making Great Impressions and Impact

Mentorship at Youth Practice

Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Top

We have no dual meet this Thursday evening; so after our practice, the coaching staff, team captains and a select group of high school wrestlers will go to the first youth practice at the River Falls Armory.  Our roles are to be embassadors, engage with the kids and their parents and to give a good impression to families that are new to the sport.  Youth director David Black will be in charge.  For many youth wrestlers and their parents, your character will be the first and most significant impression on their idea of what a wrestler really is.  Throughout the youth season we will continually have ambassadors at the youth practices.

Division 1 Sectional Tournament

Saturday, February 18, 2012

Top

Individuals that qualified for this tournament by placing 4th or better in the regional tournament will try to advance and qualify for the WIAA Individual State Tournament by placing either first or second in each weight class.  The structure is an 8-man bracket (top four from each region in our section).  The top two will advance and earn a berth in the WIAA individual state tournament the following week in Madison.  Wrestlers can wrestle back up to 2nd place to qualify for state tournament.  At this point in the season, records do not matter, previous wins or losses do not matter; it all comes down to the ability to beat the guy that is in front of you.  At this point, the term "upset" is absolutely par for the course.  Countless underdogs have emerged from the bottom of the bracket; whereas, on the same token, as many regional champions take the opportunity to further the gap between themselves and the rest of the pack.

Sectional teams include Chippewa Falls, Menomonie, Eau Claire North, Eau Claire Memorial, Superior, Hudson and New Richmond, plus Antigo, D.C. Everest, Lakeland, Rhinelander, Merrill, Wausau West, Wausau East, and Marshfield.

No Bus for the 2012 Sectional Tournament - The Tournament is in Near-By Eau Claire
Coach Bus to the Sectional Tournament

Depending on the location and proximity (usually if the location is more than 2 hours away), the River Falls Wrestling Booster Club usually charters a coach bus and seats are available for anyone wishing to come to cheer for the team.  The entire wrestling team is highly encouraged to come and experience this fantastic event.  This is often one of the most emotional and exciting tournaments of the year.  For some seniors, this tournament will mark the last time that they wear the River Falls Wrestling uniform as any finish 3rd place or lower - will mark the end of the high school season.

This is roughly a 3 hour trip no matter what.  Ask any veteran fan and they will quickly tell you that you cannot count on the weather (or the roads) this time of year - it may be snowing, a blinding blizzard, 0°F or all of the above (a la 2008).  You might as well let the professional driver take the stress out of the drive while you kick back, relax and share in great the camaraderie.  For those with Wi-Fi enabled laptops or devices, you will have internet access the whole way.

For clarification, all high school wrestlers and managers – do NOT have to pay for the spectator bus trip to sectionals.  These teammates are a critical part of the team’s efforts and they are highly encouraged to come.  They will still need admission money and food money for the day but their spots are reserved for the bus trip.  We are only charging parents and spectators for the bus trip.  All students will need to fill out and have the bus permission form signed.

  • Riders will arrive on time. The driver will not wait.
  • Bus starts boarding at 6:00 AM; departs at 6:15 AM sharp.
  • Exact return time is not certain; please provide your child a number to call as we come into town for a ride home.  We will leave immediately following the finals of the tournament.
  • Only students who have a signed permission slip for the bus may ride the bus.
  • Riders will obey the bus driver at all times and will remain seated.
  • Riders who repeatedly misbehave will not be allowed to ride the bus next year.
  • The athletic code as well as the wrestler's code of conduct will be enforced.

$25 per person (1-3 paying family members)
$75 max per family

Checks payable to River Falls Wrestling; payable on the bus prior to departure.

WIAA High School Individual - Kohl Center, 601 West Dayton, Madison, Wisconsin 53715

Division 1 Individual State Tournament

Thursday, February 23 through Saturday, February 25, 2012

The 69th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Individual Wrestling Championships is held at the Kohl Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.  Tickets are available on-line on the WIAA Web site through Feb. 23. Beginning Feb. 23, tickets are only available at the Kohl Center.

The entire team, managers, statisticians, alumni, fans and volunteers are all highly encouraged to come and support those that qualify for this prestigious once-in-a-lifetime tournament.  At the Kohl center, the booster club reserve multiple seats in two great sections (107 and 206) to cheer and watch the elite wrestlers from the entire state.  Some students will also venture to the 3rd level (unassigned seating).  Multiple chaperones will help supervise the students.

Get On the Bus

Coach Bus to Madison for State Tournament

The River Falls Wrestling Booster Club charters a coach bus and purchases tickets in advance.  Packages are available that include transportation, lodging and event tickets for all sessions.  We have student packages available (multiple students per room) and fan / parent packages available.  The entire wrestling team is highly encouraged to come and experience this fantastic event.  In addition, you can cheer on those that qualify for a run at the state championship.

Student Package

Charge is $160.00 per student total round trip.

Costs do not include any food or beverages but do include the admission fees for all sessions of the event.  Note: no food, beverages or coolers are allowed in the Kohl center.  Officials literally check all bags, purses, coats and camera bags at the admission gates.  All items will literally be taken and thrown away on the spot.  Therefore, all food (and water) will be have to be purchased at the Kohl Center during wrestling action.  No strollers.

Kohl Center Carry-In Policy

All students must have the spectator permission form signed and submitted with payment or brought on bus.  There will be no exceptions to this rule.  We have strict liability concerns.  Students also need to turn in a permission note signed by a parent or guardian to the school’s attendance secretary at least one week in advance.  The secretary will then give each student the pre-absence form at the time when they turn in the permission note.  To clarify, the form itself is a high school form (obtained in-person from the HS office) and needs to be given individually to each student as they physically turn in a note from their parents to the attendance secretary.  The participating wrestlers (i.e. state qualifiers) are automatically excused after the coach sends a list to the office.

The activities secretary will e-mail the entire sign-up list to teachers and administration; after this, students are excused from school for Thursday and Friday.

The state qualifiers themselves do not need to do the pre-absence form.  For questions for student absence and procedures, please contact Nancy Gunderson - Activities Secretary - 715-425-1830 ext. 1109.

Fan Options / A la Carte Items

Contact State Trip coordinator for options and details; whereas, you have further room options, nights stayed, maybe you want hotel and tickets but are driving yourself, etc.  A la carte items are not available for wrestling team / students.

  • Bus is $50.00 per person round-trip.
  • Hotel is $100.00 per each night stayed.
  • Event Tickets are $40.00 per person (includes tickets for all sessions).

Historically, these bus rides have allowed our group to get closer; the camaraderie is wonderful, riders share many stories and become acquainted with more and more fans, parents, relatives and others.  In addition, the bus allows the entire team: non-competing wrestlers and managers the opportunity to ride along to watch this very special event.  The charters comfortably carry 57 passengers.  Registration will be on a first come-first serve basis.  Advanced payment is required and balance must be paid in full by balance due date.

Saturday, March 10, 2012

We expect all RF high school wrestlers to help at this tournament (including setup, table workers and clean up) and give back to those that seek to be in your shoes some day.  Take time to talk and listen to these kids.  They need the positive reinforcement that you can uniquely give.  This is a qualifier for the WWF Kids Folkstyle State tournament to be held two weeks later in March at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.  The top two place winners in each age and weight classes qualify for the state tournament.

Kevin Black has studied this topic extensively and put together a comprehensive easy-to-read guide for parents and wrestlers on this topic.

Whether you are concerned with diet, what to pack for a lunch for a tournament, what to eat after a match, or ideas on new foods to try.  There are many misconceptions on food and diet when it comes to sports and especially wrestling.  Just like on the mat, planning and careful consideration is required with respect to nutrition.

Kevin has worked with local, regional, national and international wrestling programs and has a great breadth of knowledge on this topic.
