Middle School Wrestling The Next Step
Wanted: All sixth, seventh and eighth grade students that are looking for a challenge and for some great fun. Meyer Middle School along with students from St. Bridget's, Montessori Academy, Heartland Montessori and home school programs are highly encouraged to participate. We have a parent / student information meeting one week before Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 18 at 6:30 PM (both Middle School and High School). In addition, we will have a middle school wrestling meeting immediatley after practice some time within the first two weeks of practice start. Our first practice begins on Tuesday, December 13 at the Meyer Middle School in the lower level multi-purpose room. There are some early season open tournament opportunities prior to this date; however, during the "school season", per WIAA, athletes cannot participate in any open tournaments. Open tournament participation and competition is encouraged both before and after the "school season". For those that continue after the school season, they can work and qualify at the youth regional in river Falls, then possibly participate in the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Youth Folkstyle Tournament, held in Madison. | Letter to Parents of Middle Schoolers that are New to the Sport | | This follow up letter is particularly for those parents and students that are new to the sport, and seeking some additional context, information and assurance. For some, when your child tells you that they want to try wrestling - you immediately envision your child vaulted into the air by a testosterone-filled adolescent wearing a Superman costume or a cage fighter with blood strewing from their forehead. If the idea of wrestling may bring fear to your mind based upon the images on television, then put your mind at ease. Amateur wrestling is very different from the professional wrestlers and cage fighters seen on television. Download the letter for additional information. Middle School Follow Up Letter

When the Dust Settles - After the Match / Tournament McDonald's Restaurant After most nearby tournaments or matches, Coach Butch will take the kids to a post-event meal at McDonalds. This is not automatic; however, it has normally been routine. This is a good time to reminisce, catch up, and to unwind after a long day. This is not a requirement for your wrestler / manager to attend or to eat. This is just a head’s up to send a few dollars for their meal. The bus will return to the Middle School parking lot immediately after McDonalds. If you talk to a high school wrestler that went through this rite of passage, they will often comment that their best memories were not only the matches, but during the famous McNugget eating contests after the matches.

Triple Header Weekend Event 1 Middle School Tournament Friday, February 3, 2012 We host a middle school tournament on Friday night February 4. This is a great event for all 6, 7 and 8th grade wrestlers from the area. Last season we had 135+ area wrestlers competing. Competition is great and the atmosphere is electric. Note: all RF varsity wrestlers are expected to help setup and work this event. Set up starts at approximately 3:30 PM and wrestling starts at 4:30 PM. For the first part of the event, the varsity high school team will work the tables, do the set up and help throughout. The varsity team wrestling in the Big Rivers-Dunn St. Croix conference tournament in the morning are asked to leave at around 8:00 to get a good night sleep and to focus on their championships in the morning. The high school junior varsity wrestlers will be in Menomonie Friday night for their own JV conference tournament.

Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Kids Folkstyle State - Regional Tournament 2nd Saturday in March - Saturday, March 10, 2012 This fantastic tournament is a “qualifier” for the WWF Kids Folkstyle State tournament. Two weeks after the regional tournament, the state tournament begins at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The top two place winners in each age and weight classes qualify for entry and participation in the state tournament. All wrestlers born 1995 and after are encouraged to participate. This is truly a taste for a higher level of competition and is a large tournament (usually somewhere around 400 kids) held right here in River Falls. Youth wrestlers are encouraged to talk with the coach and director about this tournament. This is one of the critical events of the year where we truly need help from the (middle school) parents. For most parents, they have never "worked a mat" or sat in as a table worker. For these unseasoned parents, we are setting up a "Table Worker 101 Station". You will go to a live mat and sit in position. Another experienced worker will literally sit right over your shoulder and walk you through the process of a match - step-by-step. You can ask all the questions and get immediate answers on-the-fly. It is one thing for someone to tell you how to do things, but we feel it is much easier and less intimidating if we can show you how to do things. Coaching will be available but not guaranteed at this event.
All registration and weigh-ins will be done Friday night March 9th from 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm at the regional site; there are no weigh-ins on Saturday at all. Since all weigh-ins will be completed Friday night, wrestling will start at 8:30 am (Saturday) for the youngest 2 boys’ age groups along with all of the girls, and 11:30 am for the oldest 2 boys’ age groups. USA Wrestling cards are required and will be available at the door at each site. Advanced preparation is highly encouraged; plan ahead and send in for one by contacting Wisconsin Wrestling Federation membership secretary Sandy Russell (sandy.russell@wiwrestlingfederation.com) before March 1, 2012. You can also acquire the card online via online the WWF membership page (http://www.wiwrestlingfederation.com/membership-info). Whatever regional site location a wrestler registers and weighs in at, is the physical site they must actually wrestle at; there will be no forwarding of registration and weigh-in information between sites. 2012 WWF Regional Tournament Form - All Details Youth Tournaments - What to Expect
