MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM

Monday, December 14, 2009

The booster club operates the youth Pre-K through 8th grade program.  Although this program specifically includes the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade middle school athletes, the "WIAA school program" supersedes their involvement in the (youth) program until later in the season. The middle school season concludes with the WisconsinWrestling Federation Youth Folkstyle Tournament in Madison.

Our first "school season" practice begins on Monday, December 14, 2009 at the Meyer Middle School in the lower level multi-purpose room. There are some early season open tournament opportunities prior to this date; however, during the "school season", per WIAA, athletes can not participate in any open tournaments.  Open tournament participation and competition is encouraged both before and after the "school season".

Northern Badger Wrestling Classic Invitational
Tuesday and Wednesday, December 29 and 30, 2009

All RF middle school wrestlers are highly encouraged to help during this event.  While helping, it is eye opening for many athletes to see this very high level tournament.  To think that they will soon be wrestling in this very tournament next year or in a couple years is sometimes a bit overwhelming.  Every kid in this tournament was likely in a middle school program where they had good influences and goals to strive for.  For those that have yet to see a very large tournament, this is an extremely good experience right here in River Falls.

Super Youth Open Tournament
Sunday, February 7, 2010

Every year we host a super tournament.  This year it is very special because it is on Superbowl Sunday this year.  We should conclude before 2:00 PM.  This is a folkstyle event.  Pre-K up to and including 8th grade.

Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Kids Folkstyle Regional Tournament
Saturday, March 13, 2010

This fantastic tournament is a “qualifier” for the WWF Kids Folkstyle State tournament.  The state tourney is held two weeks later in March at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.  The top two place winners in each age and weight classes qualify for entry and participation in the state tournament.  All wrestlers born 1995 and after are encouraged to participate.  This is truly a taste for a higher level of competition and is a large tournament held right here in River Falls.  All middle school wrestlers are highly encouraged to participate (and dominate) in this event.  Coaching will be available but not guaranteed at this event.  Photo Right: Youth State Wrestling Tournament in Madison at the Alliant Energy Center Shown.

River Falls Annual Open Freestyle Tournament

Sunday, March 14, 2010

For those born 1996 or earlier, this is a fast-paced freestyle tournament at a great venue in the River Falls High School.  A lot of people and kids over analyze the style and method called “freestyle” wrestling.  Albeit this is an extreme simplification, essentially if you can take someone down, then you are qualified and ready for freestyle action.  A pin is still a pin.  A big change is that wrestlers try to win two of the three periods rather than accumulating points throughout the match.  For many kids it is a nice departure from folk-style wrestling and a taste of summer wrestling opportunities throughout the region.  Even if you are not participating, it is a great opportunity to see this style of wrestling as a spectator.

River Falls Days Takedown Tournament

Saturday, July 10, 2010

This is a very fast paced, relaxed tournament (if you can imagine).  As the name implies, there are no near-fall points and is very fast paced.  The last couple years, we had some truly phenomenal talent come to this great tournament.  State champions, regional champions, and even some international competitors.  They all came for wrestling, although the free hot dogs following the event were pretty good also!
