River Falls Wrestling

HOSTED TOURNAMENTS

River Falls is a wrestling town.  We have a fantastic history and a program that produces very fine student athletes.  The River Falls Wrestling Club believes that it should proactively engage and produce quality tournaments for local and area wrestling fans.

Our city and our high school is a spectacular venue for fans.  The school is wheelchair friendly, grandparent friendly, little kid friendly and especially camera friendly.  Access to all areas and levels of the gym is extremely easy.  The adjacent concession commons area has plenty of room to relax.  The parking is plentiful even at high capacity.  There are plenty of hotel rooms in town and in the area.  There are many great places to dine when visiting.

Friday and Saturday, December 28 and 29, 2012

All RF middle school wrestlers and non-participating high school wrestlers are expected to help during this event.  While helping, it is eye opening for many athletes to see this very high-level tournament.  To think that they will soon wrestle in this very tournament in the next year or two - is sometimes a bit overwhelming.  Every kid in this tournament was likely in a middle school program, where they had good influences and goals to strive for.  For those that have yet to see a very large tournament, this is an extremely good experience right here in River Falls.

A Letter from Tournament Director David Black

The December 2012, 28th Annual Northern Badger Wrestling tournament will truly be awesome!  Last year’s tournament was a gigantic success and a great boost for the athletes, coaches, fans and our wonderful community.  I am personally grateful to our own club, parents and volunteers.  These people truly produce this event to be the colossal tournament that it is.

In 1985, several area coaches felt a holiday tournament was needed.  These coaches started this tournament in Menomonie at the Johnson Field house with a 24-team field of competition.  It has now grown to 39 teams from all over the state of Wisconsin.  We do make a specific effort not to include any Minnesota teams; with the event highlighting our own Wisconsin programs. Recently, in the past few years, we made exceptions by including some other (not-so-near) states.  In 2005, we had a team from Arizona and in 2006; we had a team from Chugiak, Alaska. The Chugiak’s won their state championship in 2005 and was looking for some tough competition.  In their own words, they certainly found it here in River Falls.  Chugiak finished runner-up.  They were very grateful for the opportunity and impressed with our community and willingness to include them.  Recently I had some conversations with a coach in Alabama about future participation.  They are seriously considering it; however, timing and funds will ultimately tell what their future is.

After a quick scan of the coaches this year, 19 of them had been participants in this actual tournament.  Two of them being our own high school coaches - Brady Cudd and Joe Cudd. The tournament has only had three four-time champions and two of them are from River Falls, Kevin Black and Collin Cudd and Spring Valley’s Tyler Turner.  All three of those wrestlers went on to be UW-Badgers and competed for their entire college career as varsity wrestlers. Throughout the years, I have had numerous college coaches and recruiters that have contacted me about athletes that compete in the Northern Badger tournament.  Many athletes unknowingly gave themselves an opportunity to wrestle in college from those coaches that watched them at this tournament.

As I mention college wrestlers, did you know that River Falls Wrestling alumni - Brady Cudd, Joe Cudd, Kevin Black, Tony Black, Collin Cudd and Trevor Brandvold have all been wrestlers for the Wisconsin Badgers in the past?  Those six wrestlers had 17 Northern Badger championship titles between them.  This speaks extremely well of the tournament and this River Falls program.

I look forward to seeing all of you at this awesome event!

Yours in Wrestling, Dave Black  dave@riverfallswrestling.org

Middle School Tournament

Friday, February 3, 2012

We host a middle school tournament on Friday night February 4.  This is a great event for all 6, 7 and 8th grade wrestlers from the area.  Last season we had 135+ area wrestlers competing.  Competition is great and the atmosphere is electric.  Note: all RF varsity wrestlers are expected to help setup and work this event.  Set up starts at approximately 3:30 PM and wrestling starts at 4:30 PM.  For the first part of the event, the varsity high school team will work the tables, do the set up and help throughout.  The varsity team wrestling in the Big Rivers-Dunn St. Croix conference tournament in the morning are asked to leave at around 8:00 to get a good night sleep and to focus on their championships in the morning.  The high school junior varsity wrestlers will be in Menomonie Friday night for their own JV conference tournament.

Super River Falls Open Youth Tournament

Sunday, February 5, 2012

Every year we host a super youth tournament for pre-K through 8th grade wrestlers from throughout the area.  This is a very fun and fast-paced event.  We usually bring in over 300 area wrestlers.  All high school wrestlers are expected to help at this event as table workers and as referees.  This year David Black will conduct a ½ hour referee clinic to better prepare the officials.  Wrestling should wrap up around 2:30 PM with clean up thereafter.  All high school wrestlers are expected to help assist with this event and clean up / tear down.

Kids Folkstyle State - Regional Tournament

2nd Saturday in March - Saturday, March 10, 2012

This is an awesome event that we have the privilege of hosting here in River Falls.  This fantastic tournament is a “qualifier” for the WWF Kids Folkstyle State tournament. Two weeks after the regional tournament, the state tournament begins at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. The top two place winners in each age and weight classes qualify for entry and participation in the state tournament. All wrestlers eighth grade and younger are encouraged to participate. This is truly a taste for a higher level of competition and is a large tournament (usually somewhere around 400 kids) held right here in River Falls. Youth wrestlers are encouraged to talk with the coach and director about this tournament.  For many youth and middle-school wrestlers, this is the true test of their abilities - matching their abilities with the best from our entire region.

We are running many mats and will also utilize the second (auxiliary) gym for the additional mats. In addition, we are sponsoring other clubs to run 6 mats (with tableworkers) throughout the event.

This is one of the critical events of the year where we truly need help from the (middle school) parents. For most parents, they have never "worked a mat" or sat in as a table worker. For these unseasoned parents, we are setting up a "Table Worker 101 Station". You will go to a live mat and sit in position. Another experienced worker will literally sit right over your shoulder and walk you through the process of a match - step-by-step. You can ask all the questions and get immediate answers on-the-fly. It is one thing for someone to tell you how to do things, but we feel it is much easier and less intimidating if we can show you how to do things.

We expect all RF high school wrestlers to help at this tournament (including setup, table workers and clean up) and give back to those that seek to be in your shoes some day. Take time to talk and listen to these kids. They need the positive reinforcement that you can uniquely give

Coaching will be available but not guaranteed at this event.

All registration and weigh-ins will be done Friday night March 9th from 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm at the regional site; there are no weigh-ins on Saturday at all.

Since all weigh-ins will be completed Friday night, wrestling will start at 8:30 am (Saturday) for the youngest 2 boys’ age groups along with all of the girls, and 11:30 am for the oldest 2 boys’ age groups.

USA Wrestling cards are required and will be available at the door at each site. Advanced preparation is highly encouraged; plan ahead and send in for one by contacting Wisconsin Wrestling Federation membership secretary Sandy Russell (sandy.russell@wiwrestlingfederation.com) before March 1, 2012. You can also acquire the card online via online the WWF membership page (http://www.wiwrestlingfederation.com/membership-info).

Whatever regional site location a wrestler registers and weighs in at, is the physical site they must actually wrestle at; there will be no forwarding of registration and weigh-in information between sites.
