SUMMER WRESTLING

There are many events throughout the spring and summer for those wrestlers that wish to continue to develop throughout the year.

Kevin Black serves a key role as River Falls Wrestling booster club's development and outreach director.  We are very fortunate to have his school right here in River Falls.  It is commonplace for regional athletes traveling hundreds of miles away - that wish to continue wrestling during the summer - to work with Kevin at his Victory School of Wrestling.  He offers individual training sessions and hosts a variety of different camps throughout the summer.

Wrestlers of all abilities come to River Falls (some from hundreds of miles away) to train and learn in order to compliment and supplement the efforts of their own high school and middle school wrestling coaches and their folkstyle programs.  They gain confidence and knowledge not only from coaching but primarily from the experience with non-fellow-teammate partners from other schools and other towns.

One of the many benefits of "summer" wrestling include working with a different coach with international experience but most importantly working effectively with different and often highly skilled training partners.

Parents that casually observe practices at Victory sometimes comment that the kids appear to be always playing.  They train very hard and play very hard and they keep coming back to learn more and develop more.  At the same time, they are learning very well with an extremely good coach in an extremely good program.  Caution: Kevin's passion for the sport and love for competition is very contagious!

Most summer wrestling events require an official "USA Card".  This is an annual renewal for those who have purchased one in the past.  You can get a USA Wrestling Card at the USA Wrestling Membership Page

River Falls Annual Open Freestyle Tournament
Sunday, March 14, 2010

For those born 1996 or earlier, this is a fast paced freestyle tournament at a great venue in the River Falls High School.  A lot of people and wrestlers new to this international style over analyze and worry too much about the differences.  Albeit this is an extreme simplification, essentially if you can take someone down, then you are qualified and ready for freestyle action.  For many kids it is a nice departure from folkstyle wrestling and a taste of summer wrestling opportunities throughout the region.  Even if you are not participating, it is a great opportunity to see this style of wrestling as a spectator.

ASICS / USAW Jr. / Cadet Folkstyle National Championships
Thursday through Saturday, April 1 - 3, 2010 - Cedar Falls, Iowa

You have seen wrestlers from the last half-century compete for them. It is commonly known as the “stop sign.” USA Wrestling’s eight-sided All-American trophies are some of the most sought-after in all of wrestling and on April 1-3, 2010, wrestlers will have another chance to win some major hardware at the Asics USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. This is the final USA Wrestling event of the Folkstyle season and is the last opportunity for wrestlers to ascend the USA Wrestling Future Olympian Rankings as a part of the Ultimate Challenge series. It is also the first stage of the Triple Crown, which is made up of the Folkstyle Nationals, and the Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals. Finalists in the junior division qualify for funded-access to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. The UNI-Dome has been a mainstay when it comes to wrestling competitions, with the 2010 event-taking place on 25 mats. Be sure to challenge yourself against the best in the country by participating in the 2010 Asics USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships.

River Falls Days Takedown Tournament
Saturday, July 10, 2010

This is a very fast paced, relaxed tournament (if you can imagine).  As the name implies, there are no near-fall points and is very fast paced.  The last couple years, we had some truly phenomenal talent come to this great tournament.  State champions, regional champions, and even some international competitors.  They all came for wrestling, although the free hot dogs following the event were pretty good also!

USA Wrestling - ASICS/Vaughan National Championships
Saturday, July 17 through Saturday, July 24, 2010 - Fargo Dome, Fargo, ND

This is the grand-daddy of freestyle and greco-roman competition with men's and women's teams represented by at least 47 of all 50 states in the country.  For Wisconsin, a national team is selected during the team camp held earlier in July in each of the two wrestling styles.  Competitors then travel and room with other Wisconsin team members to participate in this awesome event held at the Fargo Dome.  Competitors can choose Greco, Freestyle or both styles of competition.
