SUMMER WRESTLING - EXPAND YOUR HORIZONS

"Summer Wrestling" can easily be described as anything that happens after the "school season" is complete.  There are many events throughout the spring and summer for those wrestlers that wish to continue to develop throughout the year.

Kevin Black serves a key role as River Falls Wrestling booster club's development and outreach director.  We are very fortunate to have his school and facility right here in River Falls.  It is routine for regional athletes to travel 80+ miles (one way) to work with Kevin and Victory School of Wrestling.  Victory School of Wrestling offers individual training sessions and hosts a variety of different camps and clinics throughout the year.

Many commonly refer to "wrestling in the summer and winning in the winter".  Ask any coach and they will agree that effective summer wrestling with purpose and direction - definitely makes winter champions.

 Why Wrestle Freestyle (Article)

Wrestlers of all abilities come to River Falls to train and learn to compliment and supplement the efforts of their own high school and middle school wrestling coaches and their folkstyle programs.  They gain confidence and knowledge not only from elite coaching but primarily from the experience they gain with non-fellow-teammate partners from other schools and other towns.  A lot of athletes get complacent with their normal training partners and know their partners too well; therefore, one of the many benefits of "spring and summer" wrestling include working with a different coach but most importantly working effectively with different and highly skilled training partners.

Parents that casually observe practices at Victory sometimes comment that the kids appear to be always playing.  They train very hard and play very hard and they keep coming back to learn more and develop more.  At the same time, they are learning very well with an extremely good coach in an extremely good program.  Caution: Kevin's passion for the sport and love for competition is very contagious!

Most spring and summer wrestling events require an official "USA Card".  This is an annual renewal for those who have purchased one in the past.  You can get a USA Wrestling Card at the USA Wrestling Membership Page.

ASICS / USAW Jr. / Cadet Folkstyle National Championships
Friday - Sunday, March 30 - April 1, 2012 - University of Northern Iowa Unidome, 2401 Hudson Road, Cedar Falls, Iowa

You have seen wrestlers from the last half-century compete for them. It is commonly known as the “stop sign.” USA Wrestling’s eight-sided All-American trophies are some of the most sought-after in all of wrestling and on March 30-31 and April 1, 2012, wrestlers will have another chance to win some major hardware at the Asics USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

This is the final USA Wrestling event of the Folkstyle season and is the last opportunity for wrestlers to ascend the USA Wrestling Future Olympian Rankings as a part of the Ultimate Challenge series. It is also the first stage of the Triple Crown, which is made up of the Folkstyle Nationals, and the Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals.

Finalists in the junior division qualify for funded-access to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. The UNI-Dome has been a mainstay when it comes to wrestling competitions, with the 2012 event-taking place on 25 mats. Be sure to challenge yourself against the best in the country by participating in the Asics USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships.

Only 1,300 Cadet and Junior level wrestlers will be able to register along with 1,500 Kids and Veteran level wrestlers. There will be no charge to athletes that change weight classes after they register, even at weigh-ins. Wrestlers are encouraged to sign up early to guarantee a spot in the tournament. Registration can be found at trackwrestling.com.

TheMat.com will provide video coverage from the event. Last year’s coverage can be viewed at Ustream.com.

This tournament offers a high quality national championship to many age groups. The divisions included in the event are Bantam, Intermediate, Novice, Schoolboy, Cadet, Junior and Veterans.

Awards will be given out to the top eight place winners in each age
and weight class. The top two teams in the Kids divisions will also receive awards.

WWF - Wisconsin State Freestyle & Greco-Roman Tournament
Saturday - Sunday, May 5-6, 2012, Chula Vista Events Center (Sports Dome), 2501 River Road, Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Located at the sports dome in Wisconsin Dells, this is a great tournament and all 1st through 6th place-winners are qualified to compete in the summer Wisconsin team camp (held in River Falls, Wisconsin) to then proceed and qualify to compete at the ASICS / Vaughan National Championships held in Fargo, North Dakota in July.

In addition, this tournament is often a very good indicator for the Wisconsin State coaches to help determine the roster for the national duals teams for both Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles.  The Wisconsin national duals team will be in a team-format national tournament against the best roster from every other state.

All wrestlers must show a Proof of Birth Year at registration to wrestle or be listed on the WWF Birth Year List.  Competitors must have an USAW Competitor card also. They will be available at the door at WI Rapids at weigh-ins, Friday and Saturday morning. If a competitor does not have one and registers and weigh-ins at a satellite site they will have to buy one as they arrive. To make things a lot simpler USAW competitor cards may be purchased ahead of time.  Baldwin Woodville High School is the closest remote weigh in site for this area.

Northern Plains Kids & Cadet Regional Championships w/ Girls Division

Thursday, June 14 - Saturday, June 16, 2012 - Heartland Events Center, Grand Island, Nebraska

USA Wrestling’s regional events are contested in freestyle and Greco-Roman, the only two styles of wrestling at the Olympic level. Freestyle wrestling is exciting, creative, and dynamic because points can be scored from almost anywhere. The most recent Olympic wrestling gold medal was won by freestyle wrestler Henry Cejudo in 2008. Other notable freestyle wrestlers include Cael Sanderson (Olympic gold medalist and four-time undefeated NCAA champion), Jake Herbert (World silver medalist and two-time NCAA Champion), and Tervel Dlagnev (World bronze medalist and two-time Division II NCAA Champion). Greco-Roman wrestling is known for powerful lifts and big throws, as all attacks must be made above the waist. Current National Greco-Roman Head Coach Steve Fraser was a gold medalist in 1984, and Rulon Gardner won gold in 2000.

Wrestlers in the kids division (Intermediate, Novice, and Schoolboy/girl) must reside in one of the states that make up the region in which they are competing. To determine your region, visit www.usawrestling.org. The Cadet regionals are open to all athletes who meet the age categories. Cadets do NOT have to meet residency requirements.

All wrestlers competing in the kids regionals qualify for USA Wrestling's ASICS Kids Freestyle & Greco-Roman National Championships in Orem, UT, June 27-29, 2011. At the Junior and Cadet levels, the top three (3) place winners in each weight class qualify for their state's National Team above the state limit. USA Wrestling's ASICS/Vaughan Junior & Cadet National Championships are in July, in Fargo, ND. Additionally, all athletes must follow their respective state policies even though they may place in the top three (3) at a Regional event.

USA Wrestling - National Junior Duals Tournament

Tuesday, June 26 through Saturday, June 30, 2012 - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Each year, the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation selects an entire roster to compete against many of the nation's top high school wrestlers, and features the Olympic styles of wrestling: men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman.  The true strength of the team is determined at the end of the event since a team format mitigates the influence of a single dominant wrestler in a lineup.  This year’s matches will be posted at Badger State Wrestling and streaming live.

Wisconsin Wrestling Federation Cadet & Junior National Training Camps

July 2012 - River Falls, Wisconsin

The 2012 Junior National Team Training Camp will take place in River Falls. Each camp participant will stay at the Crossings Inn & Suites, 1525 Commerce Court, River Falls, WI 54022 (715-425-9500).  All wrestlers will train at a nearby gym which is walking distance (approximately 1 mile / 20 minutes) from the hotel.

National Team Allocation & Selection

Wisconsin is allotted 51 cadets and 45 junior wrestlers per style with a maximum of four wrestlers per weight class. The only spot that is guaranteed is that of the state champion at that weight in the State Greco/Freestyle Tournament held in April. The other spots per weight class will be determined at camp. Only the champion at the state freestyle/Greco meet is guaranteed a spot for Fargo and it is at the weight that he won it. In addition, if you place in the top three at one of the USAW Regionals (i.e. Northern Plains) you automatically qualify and do not count against our allotment for Fargo - but all wrestlers must still attend the camp.

Again, the (FR and/or GR) state champion is guaranteed a roster spot at the same weight class and same style.  The rest of the spots are determined at camp (it is a requirement to attend camp).  If there are more than 4 athletes at weight class, wrestle-offs are conducted during camp to determine the final roster.  Automatic qualifiers (state champions and top 3 finishers at regionals are not included in the wrestle-off process).

Costs

There are camp fees, Fargo fees for each style, uniform fees and eating expenses.  The cost of the national team training camp is $275 (cadets and juniors).  This includes hotel stay; however, participants are responsible for their own meals during camp.  There are a number of places to eat and a Walgreens within walking distance to the hotel.

For those who make (qualify for) the National Team and are planning to attend the National Championships in Fargo, there is an additional $75 fee per style. It covers the cost of the bus trips, hotel stay in Fargo, and the entry fee in to the tournament. The Uniform Package is an additional $185 and includes new singlets for 2011. (This is the same package used at the Folkstyle Nationals, Cadet/Junior Duals, etc. So if you have already purchased if for these events, you will already have what you need.) Each participant who competes in the National Championships must wear the 2011 Wisconsin Singlet. We strongly recommend that if you want all items in the package to fit, order your uniform package in advance. You will not be guaranteed the exact size requested unless you pre-order your uniform package from All-American Wrestling Supply. They can be reached at 888-285-2228. No uniform package will be sold at camp. However, singlets will be available for temporary use in Fargo. There will be no charge for the temporary use of the singlets. If they are not returned in Fargo, however, you will be billed $120.
